Laughing With The Master: In Praise Of P.G. Wodehouse.

Laughter comes in several ways. Humour assumes many forms - from savage sarcasm to gentle raillery or banter. When a writer succeeds in combining in himself the talents of a benign satirist and skills of a compulsive funster, he can rarely fail to command admiration of the reader. And, if the whole product is packaged in layers of letter-perfect idiom, a startlingly apt metaphor and an assured mastery of language, the author can be none other or less than The Master - as P. G. Wodehouse (1881-1975) was called even during his lifetime. He was also referred to variously as the' Lord of the Language', 'Prince among Humourists', 'Our National Artificer', 'Lord of the Apt Phrase' and 'English Literature's Laughing God'. Wodehouse has held in thrall successive generations of delighted readers, many of whom "grew up and grew old" on him. His appeal not merely remains undiminished but would seem actually to grow with each passing year since his demise. This book analyses the many-splendoured storehouse of Wodehouse humour, and attempts to assign to him a slot in the distinguished pantheon of English humour.
